Background of the study
Phonetic training involves systematic instruction in pronunciation, articulation, and voice modulation. In Nigerian drama groups in Lagos, effective phonetic training is crucial for clear speech delivery during performances. Given the diversity of accents and dialects in Lagos, drama groups often face challenges in achieving intelligible and expressive speech (Adeniyi, 2023). This study examines how structured phonetic training impacts speech clarity, focusing on parameters such as articulation precision, intonation, and rhythm. Through pre- and post-training assessments, the study employs acoustic analysis to measure improvements in speech clarity among actors. Additionally, qualitative feedback from directors and audience members is considered to gauge perceptual enhancements. Improved phonetic training is expected to enhance not only theatrical performance but also broader communication skills among participants, ultimately contributing to more effective public discourse (Okeke, 2024). The findings will inform curriculum development in drama education and professional training programs in Lagos.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of phonetic training, many Nigerian drama groups in Lagos lack structured programs that address speech clarity issues. Inadequate training often results in inconsistent articulation, reduced intelligibility, and suboptimal performance quality (Adeniyi, 2023). This shortfall hampers both artistic expression and audience engagement. Current approaches to phonetic instruction are sporadic and not systematically evaluated, leaving a gap in understanding the precise impact of targeted phonetic interventions. Addressing this deficiency is essential for developing effective training modules that enhance speech clarity and overall performance in drama groups.
